Ganesha Chaturthi  also known as Vinayaka Chaturthi, is the Hindu festival of Ganesha, the elephant headed son of Shiva and Parvati, who is believed to bestow his presence on earth for all his devotees in the duration of this festival. It is the birthday of Lord Ganesha who is widely worshiped as the god of wisdom, prosperity and good fortune.

The festival is observed in the Hindu calendar month of Bhaadrapada, starting on the shukla chaturthi (fourth day of the waxing moon period). The date usually falls between 20 August and 15 September. The festival lasts for 10 days, ending on Anant Chaturdashi (fourteenth day of the waxing moon period).

While celebrated all over India, it is most elaborate in Maharashtra, Goa, Gujarat, Karnataka, Tamil Nadu and Andhra Pradesh. Outside India, it is celebrated widely in Nepal and Tamil Hindus in Sri Lanka.

Vaikathashtami Festival is a very popular festival of Kerala which takes place during the month of November or December. This festival is dedicated to the worship of Lord Shiva in the form of Shivalinga. The Vaikathashtami Festivalis observed at Vaikom Mahadeva Temple and Sri Makreri Temple. These temples are  the oldest and the most popular temples of the country.

        The Temple Tank of the Makreri Subrahmanya Swami Temple holds the rare distinction of being the only one in Kannur district to be sanctified by the presence of the holy river Kavery at the time of the THULA SANKRAMAM and the eleven days following.Since reaching Makreri temple was not so easy in the past,other temples laid claim to  this honour.  Legend says that Lord Sreeram directed Shri Hanuman to bathe in a small pool of holy water before praying to the lord.Since the dimension of the pool were too small,Lord Hanuman struck his tail on the ground,thus creating a large body of water.The tank of Makreri temple does not conferm to the dimension of other temple ponds that are usually constructed on principles of vastu nor does it lie along a conventional  direction.This fact is considered by devotees to lend support to the legend.. Since the presence  of Kaveri enhances the sanctity of the Makreri temple pond during this period,it is an opportune ideal  time for pilgrims to visit the temple and bathe in the tank before praying to the Lord.By doing so,they will also be following the  directionof LORD  SREERAMA.                                           MANOHARAN.K.P, ,EXECUTIVE  0FFICER.
